Too sweet to handle!

Updated: Nov 2, 2021

One of the major reasons for my weight gain through the pandemic has been how easily accessible sugary foods are in our daily lives. I found myself munching on chocolate while watching recipes of healthy soups, low carb dinner ideas and easy 10 minute breakfast options. Eventually, the grab-and-go energy bars always won against the tedium of buying and cleaning vegetables, chopping and the resulting pile of vessels left in the sink. And this left me 10 kgs heavier (albeit drowning in "happy hormones"!)

What's actually happening?

1. The more you get, the more you need

Sugar has been found to be as addictive as cocaine and nicotine. Which means people craving sugars (well, me) need a fix as much as those craving hard drugs or a smoke. And you will consistently need more and more sugar to satisfy those cravings. I've experienced this myself. While initially dessert every third day would suffice (along with a sweet treat at the end of lunch), I soon found myself grabbing a piece of chocolate 3-4 times a day. Midnight snacks or cereals for breakfast, all loaded with sugar!

2. The ride of your life!

Constantly using sugars to fulfill your caloric needs puts your body in a confused state. The sugar will give you a sudden burst of energy and the subsequent drop will leave you waiting for the next sweet treat. Even worse, when you don't get it, you'll feel tired, sad and drained. It can also cause headaches, fatigue and depression. And that feeling is what leads to a drop in motivation when you decide to quit sugar overnight.

3. Why me???

Sugar cravings aren't only a result of habit or a sweet tooth. Sometimes, we need to delve deeper because finding the cause might give us a solution. Checking for diabetes by monitoring blood sugar levels is the first essential step as fluctuating insulin levels may manifest as drop in energy levels. Magnesium deficiency also directly affects the ability of our body to use sugar. Not having enough protein or fibre is something you may not be conscious of, but it may also leave you running low on fuel.

In our next article, we will explore how to overcome sugar cravings (and avoid mindless snacking).
